THE FARM FAMILY

Meet Our Furry & Feathered Friends

The heart of our farm beats through our animals. From our furry duo to feathered friends, each has a name and a story to tell.

Cleo the Farm Dog

We often joke that Cleo is two dogs in one, Cleopatra Puffypants in the winter, and Cleo in the summer. It all has to do with the length of her coat. She’s a 9-year-old Sheepadoodle (Old English Sheepdog/Poodle) with a heart of gold. She’s as trustworthy as they come around our youngest visitors, and is besties with our resident feline. Her favorite job is herding deer—even though they don’t seem to appreciate it.

The Indestructible Bertha

Bertha, an American Peking duck, came with the property. She is a sweet, very large duck that was born with disabilities. But what makes Bertha remarkable (and worthy of a story), is her resilience. She has survived not one, but two, mink attacks, and lived to tell the tale. She is quick to greet, and loves food. And did we mention she loves food? She is a farm favorite, and extremely bonded to Grandpa Chris.

Fern The Friendly Giant

We adopted Fern from PAWS as a tiny kitten. Little did we know he would end up so BIG! The vet thinks Fern is a Maine Coon/Norwegian Forest Cat mix. To us, he is 21 pounds of love. Fern is as easygoing as they come. He prefers spending time with Cleo, and is terrified of chickens. He loves to follow us around the garden, and, like any cat, adores napping in a perfect patch of sun.

The Shens (aka She Hens)

We got our first flock in 2021, and have added to it ever since. We have australorps, orpingtons, Easter eggers, olive eggers, cream legbars, and more. All the girls are named after plants and flowers, except for our sweet “Tuna, the chicken near the sea.” We handle the chicks frequently as they grow, so they’re used to humans. If we’ve learned anything, it’s that chickens are weird, wonderful, and worth it—even when you’re tending to hurt wings, making sure they’re safe during extreme weather, trapping minks, and constantly having to clean the coop.

Eloquent Elliott

Elliott is every little girl's fantasy. A majestic Friesian cross with that extra-flowing forelock, mane, and tail. More importantly, he’s a gentleman that loves people. Although Elliott is still young and in training, he is well on his way to being an expert wagon puller and trail horse. He has been exposed to working cattle, driving, both English and Western riding disciplines, and trails. He’s an all-around kind of guy.

In Loving Memory - Daisy Dude

Our “dude” started out as Daisy. But since chicken sexing is only about 90% accurate, it’s not surprising we ended up with Daisy Dude instead. Although he’s passed of old age, our massive boy will never be forgotten. He was easily bossed around by the Shens, loved to take a good selfie, and was as nice as a rooster can be. He also had the perfect crow. Daisy has been laid to rest in a special place, still overlooking his girls.
